Her story (as shared by her nominator)

Our father, a taxi-driver, was the sole breadwinner for a family of five. Hence, my sister, Candice, chose to undertake an Accountancy degree in order to ease the family's financial burden. Through the years, she has never forgotten her initial passion to be a nurse.

 

In 2016, she bravely took up the Professional Conversion Programme offered by WSG to fulfill her dream. Having gone through rigorous training in NYP and the restructured hospitals, she is now serving patients in the community, immersing in chronic disease management and preventive healthcare. She finds a sense of fulfillment

especially in treating patients' wounds and seeing their improvement, hence she has taken the initiative to attend various courses and lectures to hone her skills on wound management.

 

Candice also contributes actively to the local newspapers, bringing to light issues of concern to the community at large and proposing potential solutions or preventive measures. At home, Candice is a strong pillar of support for her family, whipping up sumptuous meals whenever time allows. Despite her busy schedule, she also helps to bring our mother, a cancer patient, for regular checkups and never forgetting to bring a touch of love to our grandmother, currently coping with dementia.

 

Candice has a strong passion to care, not only through her career, but also for everyone around her. Though young in her career, she is already acting as a trainer for new nurses. Even when most people shun the healthcare sector during this period of COVID-19, she has bravely stepped up to her calling to serve and care. I believe this spirit of altruism should be recognized and celebrated.

Greatest achievement

My greatest achievement thus far has been to bring up my only son to be a well-mannered, humble, helpful and hardworking young man, who has also won The Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science in 2020.  I was a stay-home mother to my son until he finished his PSLE national exams, an arrangement which would not have been possible without the support of my husband.

 

Biggest challenge thus far

I was diagnosed with cancer during my first year of nursing studies, but I forged on, going through surgery and radiotherapy thereafter, and was even on Director's List in school.
